Breaking silence… and a new book on the way

I realize with some consternation that I have not published a blog post in a year. However, that’s not because I haven’t been writing, but rather because I’ve been writing largely in private. I sat down about a year ago to write a keynote speech, and before I knew it I had 20,000 words – far too long for the talk in question, and I felt I was still skimming the surface of the topic. So it seemed that a book had started to write itself, without any conscious intention on my part.

I’ve presented core ideas in keynotes, lectures, and papers since then, in Latin America and continental Europe, so the material has been developing. I’ve also done a bit of research in situ in Latin America. I’m now focusing on fleshing out the ideas, aiming to get a first draft finished soon.

I haven’t decided the full title of the book yet, but it is on music and relationality, and I’m toying with Musicking in a Relational Key as the main phrase.

I’m pondering publication options that will be fast, open access (i.e. free), and will allow versions in multiple languages. I haven’t made a decision yet, but I’m hoping that whatever solution I find is going to allow me to publish the book this year, hopfully towards the middle rather than the end. If you’re interested, please watch this space (despite my recent inactivity on here)…
